Interesting study, but the title smacks somewhat of hyperbole. As you say in the article, this is a survey of PUBLIC OPINION, not an actual demonstration of which is actually more trustworthy. If you want an indicator of how good public opinion is, reflect on the fact that half of Americans don’t know how long it takes for the earth to orbit the sun, or that 40% of them think that humans and dinosaurs co-existed!

Most scientists I know are trustworthy (and I am a scientist), especially in their given field; however that’s not universal, and certainly not in every sphere of a person’s life. I don’t know the situation in China well, but in most of the world fabricating data is a perfect way to get a one-way trip out of academia.
